ALWAYS WITH YOU

By Enola Jones

"Why is it I seem lately to always end up with you?" Rodney groused as he worked.

Ronon just rolled his eyes. "Yeah, well, you ignoring me until you need something blasted wears kind'a thin, too."

"Oh, please! Like I could ever ignore you! You're too big, for--" He bellowed wordlessly as he was shocked. Again.

"Move over, let me see."

"You?" Rodney scoffed. "Really?"

Ronon shot him a glare, and his voice lowered to a dangerous growl. "You're judging me for what seven years of trying to stay alive made me into. You don't rise to the rank of Specialist on Sateda by being stupid. And being stupid sure as hell doesn't attract our generation's most powerful medical mind!"

Rodney's eyes were huge. "Your... your wife, right? Muh-something? M-Morena?"

"Close." But Ronon was smiling, just a little. "Melena."

"I'm sorry. I'm not good with names."

"Yeah, but you tried. And you came real close." He gestured. "Come here, look at this."

Rodney did so, and groaned. "That's where the damned short keeps coming from!" He fixed it and smiled up at Ronon. "Hey. Thanks."

"Any time, McKay."

"Rodney."

"Rodney."

On their next mission, Rodney found another power signature. "Okay," John said. "Rodney, you and I will--"

"Uh?" Rodney interrupted. "Sure it's a good idea to keep the gene carriers together? I-I mean, tactically..."

John and Teyla looked at him, visibly startled.

Ronon just grinned.

"You've got a point," John conceded. "Okay, you and Ronon go check out that energy signature. We'll go see how things are in that village."

As they split up, Ronon asked, "Is it a ZPM signature?"

"I'm not sure, yet," Rodney admitted. "We're still too far away."

Ronon nodded. "Remember how to walk, Rodney."

"Right." He changed position, putting the hand with the scanner where it was protected, closer to his body. He flicked his sidearm cover open so he could get to it in seconds. And he altered the position of his head, so he could keep attention on what was around him as well as on the scanner.

Ronon grinned. They had been teaching each other.

Since they always ended up together anyway – why not?
